Milwaukee, Wi. (KFMO) - For the second straight night, the Cardinals needed extras, but they once again defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.
St. Louis was able to load the bases in the first, which allowed them to push home a couple of runs on back-to-back walks given up by Milwaukee starter Colin Rea. That 2-0 lead would hold until the 7th, when Milwaukee finally got on the board on a fielder's choice. The next inning, Milwaukee tied the game back up at 2-2 following a solo home run for Eric Haase. Neither team would score in the ninth, sending it to extras for the second straight game.
Fortunately, the Cardinals once again had the edge in the extra frames. In the top of the 10th, Luken Baker hit a two-out ground ball back up the middle, scoring extra runner Masyn Wynn from second to take the 3-2 lead.
With the lead regained, Ryan Fernandez was called upon to close out the bottom of the 10th, and he did just that, striking out three of the four batters he faced to earn his second save and give the Cardinals their second straight win.
Andrew Kittredge earns the win for the Cardinals after pitching the 8th and the 9th. Joel Payamps is the losing pitcher for Milwaukee. St. Louis is now 71-69, but still 5.5 games out of the third and final Wild Card spot. The team is off Thursday before embarking on a weekend series against Seattle. First pitch Friday will be at 7:15PM, pregame starts at 6:20 on B104.3.
