Washington Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Both the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Potosi have been officially awarded the Missouri Blue Shield designation by the Missouri Department of Public Safety. This prestigious recognition highlights local governments that show exceptional dedication to enhancing public safety and fostering strong partnerships between law enforcement and the community.
The Missouri Blue Shield Program was established by Governor Mike Kehoe in January 2025 through Executive Order 25-03. The initiative aims to spotlight communities that are making significant strides in reducing crime, investing in public safety, and prioritizing collaboration between agencies and citizens.
“Public safety is the foundation of a thriving community and state,” said Governor Kehoe. “A Missouri Blue Shield designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of local governments across Missouri who are leading the way in making public safety a priority.”
The Washington County Sheriff's Office earned its designation through initiatives such as enhanced officer recruitment, major investments in law enforcement infrastructure, and strong relationships with community stakeholders. Sheriff Dwayne S. Reed said the designation affirms the department’s commitment to creating a safe and secure environment for all residents.
Likewise, the City of Potosi was honored for its dedication to proactive policing, funding for law enforcement needs, and support from city leadership. “The city is honored to receive the Missouri Blue Shield Designation,” said Mayor Joseph Blount. “I, along with the City Council, stand behind the Potosi Police Department and their efforts.” Chief of Police Wm. Michael Gum echoed the sentiment, stating the department will continue making public safety its highest priority.
Mark James, Director of the Missouri Department of Public Safety, emphasized that the Blue Shield designation also opens the door to grant opportunities for training and equipment, and shines a spotlight on these communities at the state level.
Designated communities are eligible for funding outlined in the Governor’s Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2026. Their achievements will also be highlighted on the Governor’s social media platforms and the DPS website.
The designations for both the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Potosi underscore a shared commitment to keeping citizens safe and strengthening the ties between law enforcement and the people they serve.
