Valley R-6 School District Ensures Services for Children with Disabilities

Caledonia, Mo. (KFMO) - The Valley R-6 School District is taking steps to locate and evaluate children with disabilities within its jurisdiction to ensure they receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). This effort includes children attending private schools in the district, highly mobile students such as migrant and homeless children, and those suspected of having a disability but continuing to advance from grade to grade.

The district will identify children with various disabilities, including autism, intellectual disability, hearing impairments, speech or language impairments, and others between the ages of 3 and 21. Additionally, Valley R-6 supports the Missouri First Steps program, offering early intervention services for infants and toddlers with special needs.

Parents or guardians of children with disabilities have the right to inspect, review, and request amendments to their child’s educational records. If they believe their child’s records are inaccurate or violate privacy, they can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education or the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Valley R-6 has developed a Local Compliance Plan outlining the district’s policies regarding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the handling of personally identifiable information. This plan is available for public review Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the superintendent’s office, located at #1 Viking Drive in Caledonia, Missouri.

The district will provide notices in native languages as needed.
