Jefferson Co., Mo. (KFMO) - Missourians are being warned about a new scam where criminals send fake text messages claiming to be from the Missouri Department of Revenue in an attempt to steal money and personal information.
Officials emphasize that the Department of Revenue does not contact people in this manner, and this is a clear case of fraud. Grant Bissell, Public Information Officer with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, says these fraudulent messages can be dangerous if handled incorrectly.
Bissell urges anyone who receives suspicious texts to delete them immediately and never click on any links or provide personal information. In addition to the fake Department of Revenue alerts, scammers are also sending bogus text messages about unpaid tolls, undelivered USPS packages, and fake job offers claiming to come from resume postings.
Officials remind everyone, if you’re ever in doubt about a message’s authenticity, contact the organization directly through their official website or customer service number before taking any action.
