Sheriff Dave Marshak confirmed the incident, stating that no deputies were injured. The deceased is an adult male, whose identity has not yet been released. Deputies were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. on March 3 to a home in the 8100 block of Old Highway 21, north of Hillsboro, following reports of a man banging on a home's door. Upon arrival, deputies encountered the man, who pointed a handgun at his own head.
Recognizing the potential crisis, deputies requested additional assistance. Multiple units arrived, including officers with crisis intervention training. Over the next three hours, negotiators from the Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team and the Mental Health Crisis Response Team attempted to de-escalate the situation.
After midnight, the man fired his handgun at deputies. Law enforcement officers returned fire, striking the man. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
