Wastewater testing for UK variant in Missouri

Wastewater testing finds UK variant is widespread in Missouri

New Missouri coronavirus cases are continuing, but state officials are concerned that wastewater samples show the more transmissible U.K. variant is “widespread” across our state.
The Coronavirus Sewershed Surveillance Project was created by researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the state health department and Missouri Department of Natural Resources. It samples wastewater in an effort to provide early detection of an upcoming COVID-19 outbreak or emerging novel viral variants.
University virologist Marc Johnson said the variant was detected in more than 13 wastewater systems in Missouri. Researchers say the project can provide early detection of an upcoming COVID-19 outbreak or emerging novel viral variants.
The CDC continues to urge precautions such as mask-wearing, social distancing and frequent hand-washing, and for Missourians to get vaccinated. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported 351 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 Monday, and no new deaths.
