Progress in the Parkland: Iron County Jail Brought Up-to-Date

Ironton, Mo. (KFMO) - Renovations on the Civil War-era Iron County Jail and Sheriff's House, originally built in 1866, are complete after nearly a year of work.

The project, which began in October 2023, was part of a larger effort to modernize the historic building, ensuring it can meet contemporary standards while preserving its legacy.

Iron County Presiding Commissioner Jim Scaggs described the undertaking as a significant challenge for the county saying the project was made possible by a grant from the State of Missouri, funded through the American Recovery Plan Act.

Scaggs adds the updates have expanded the jail’s capacity, allowing it to hold more prisoners and improve overall efficiency.

The nearly $2 million project has ensured the jail is now better equipped to serve the community while maintaining its historical importance.
