Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri Governor Mike Parson is asking authorities with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, to approve a major disaster declaration that would provide federal assistance to 15 counties in response to multiple severe weather systems that struck the state from May 19 through May 27, 2024.
These storms generated tornadoes, high winds, heavy rain, and flooding across southern Missouri, causing significant damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. Damage assessments estimate more than $20 million in emergency response costs and damage to public infrastructure.
Based on the assessments, Parson is requesting Public Assistance for the following counties: Barry, Bollinger, Butler, Carter, Howell, McDonald, Madison, New Madrid, Oregon, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, and Texas.
Parson is also asking for Individual Assistance in the following 10 counties: Barry, Butler, Carter, Howell, New Madrid, Ripley, Scott, Shannon, Stoddard, and Texas.
Of 543 homes assessed in these counties, 171 sustained major damage, and 20 were destroyed.
Missourians with unmet needs are encouraged to contact United Way by dialing 2-1-1 or the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.
