Beware of 'Brushing' Scams Involving Unsolicited Packages

Park Hills, Mo. (KFMO) - With the holiday season in full swing, consumers are being cautioned about a deceptive practice known as "brushing." This scam involves receiving unsolicited packages containing items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, or Bluetooth speakers. These packages often include a QR code, purportedly to reveal the sender's identity or to register the product.

Authorities warn that scanning these QR codes can compromise your personal information. Once scanned, scammers may gain access to your device, potentially leading to identity theft or financial loss. In some cases, victims have reported unauthorized bank transactions following such incidents.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has noted a resurgence of these scams during the holiday shopping season. Recipients have reported receiving faux diamond rings with QR codes urging them to register the item, which can lead to personal data theft.

What to Do if You Receive an Unsolicited Package:

Do Not Scan Unfamiliar QR Codes: Avoid scanning QR codes from unknown sources, as they may lead to phishing websites designed to steal your information.

Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank and credit accounts for any unauthorized activity.

Report the Incident: Contact local authorities or the USPS to report unsolicited packages, especially if they contain suspicious items or requests.

Protect Personal Information: Ensure your online profiles and accounts are secure, and consider changing passwords if you suspect your information has been compromised.

By staying vigilant and following these precautions, you can help protect yourself from falling victim to brushing scams this holiday season.
