160th Anniversary of the Battle of Pilot Knob Reenactment Set for this Weekend

Pilot Knob, Mo. (KFMO) - The Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site will host the 160th anniversary reenactment of the historic Civil War battle this weekend, commemorating the pivotal conflict that took place in September 1864.

The event will feature 12,000 Confederate troops under General Sterling Price, a former governor of Missouri, attacking Fort Davidson in Pilot Knob. The fort was defended by Brigadier General Thomas Ewing, alongside a combined force of 1,500 civilian volunteers and Army personnel.

The reenactment is free and open to the public, offering visitors a chance to experience life as a Civil War soldier. Spectators can explore Union and Confederate encampments, visit historical and modern vendors, and enjoy food options from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Throughout Saturday and Sunday morning, there will be demonstrations of military tactics and marching. The highlight of the event will be the reenactment of the Battle of Pilot Knob, which will take place at 1:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., visitors will witness the dramatic recreation of the fort powder magazine explosion, a key moment from the historic battle.

Brick Autry, with the Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site says this event has been going on for quite some time.

He says it was a big event at that time, expecting only 500 spectators and had well over 1,000.
