Jefferson City, Mo. (KFMO) - Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has signed Executive Order 25-19, declaring a State of Emergency as the state braces for severe weather conditions. The order activates the Missouri State Emergency Operations Plan, allowing state agencies to coordinate efforts with local jurisdictions to provide assistance.
“The National Weather Service has warned that this fast-approaching storm is likely to bring severe weather across the state, including high winds and an increased risk of tornadoes,” said Governor Kehoe. “I urge all Missourians to stay alert, monitor weather forecasts, and follow official warnings.”
The Missouri State Emergency Operations Center was fully activated at 1 p.m. today to manage response efforts.
Severe Storms Expected This Evening
According to meteorologists, the storm system will enter western Missouri around 3 p.m. and strengthen as it moves east through the evening and overnight. Forecast models indicate a heightened risk of:
- Damaging winds exceeding 70-80 mph
- Large hail, potentially golf ball-sized or larger
- Strong tornadoes (EF2+)
- Safety Precautions for Residents
Officials are urging Missourians to take necessary precautions, including:
- Postponing outdoor activities and non-essential travel
- Having multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts (radio, phone apps, NOAA weather radio)
- Identifying a safe shelter location in advance
The safest place to be during a tornado is an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy structure, away from windows. Mobile homes are not safe shelters—residents are encouraged to stay with friends, family, or at designated storm shelters well ahead of the storm's arrival.
